LESSON #1- How to Reduce or Remove Red Eye

Nothing is more disappointing than getting that “perfect” shot, then finding out your child’s pupil’s have red eye. To prevent this, a couple tips can be used. First, if the lighting is adequate, the flash may not be necessary. However, if it is necessary, a remote flash can be used. Now, I know many of us do not own a remote flash, so therefore the last alternative is using a software program to remove the red eye effect. Photoshop is an excellent program, but is expensive if you do not already own it. There is an excellent free open source program that is nearly as powerful as Photoshop available to all, yet it costs nothing. A simple search will lead you to a program called GIMP. It even looks like Photoshop, and is produced by a community effort, with changes and improvements done on a voluntary basis. I think this program is phenomenal. Happy shooting!

LESSON #2- The Key to Finding the Right Setting or Background

Many overlook how important the setting is for both your child AND you. You want to find a setting that brings out the best in your child. If it is too hot, cold or sunny outside, it will show in your photos through your child’s level of happiness. I have found that the number one rule is: Have a happy Baby! Expression is EVERYTHING! Many photographers express that the inner happiness of the child will shine through and that is often what they are looking for, or at least have in the back of their minds. A baby that they can work with in future commercials or photoshoots. So your child’s attitude and disposition are important.

LESSON #3- Composition Leads to a Balanced Photo

Lets face it, you can have the most beautiful child in the world, but if your photo looks awkward, then you will have a tough time winning. The composition of the photo gives balance, and appeals to the eye, which is the purpose of a photo contest. Props, such as a hat, a blanket, a beach towel, perhaps your kid’s favorite toy, all add an interesting touch to the photo. Many photo winners have used a hat as a complementary accessory.Positioning of the hat, the color and style add to your photo if they are complementary to the composition. A spontaneous reaction caught on film at times is priceless. One hint that I feel is noteworthy. Bring out the eye color! Bright blue eyes with a blue accessory or clothing can turn a nice picture into a head turner!
